Audible. . . Red Seven!

Proverbs 16:1 ” We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer”

God constantly reminds me that His ways are greater than my own. Many times I think I am going in the right direction, only to find myself reevaluating and changing course. The important question is, “Is this God’s will or my will?”. I have to make sure that I am not calling an audible on what God wants for me.

Here is a funny movie scene of an example of what the world can do to us when we audible out of the play God has sent in from the sideline. . .

On Friday, Jasmin and I were able to meet with a third oncologist. To rehash a little, we have seen two oncologists. Both have been in agreement that Jasmin needs chemo-therapy and surgery. One oncologist is of the opinion that surgery generally comes before chemo-therapy and that Jasmin should follow this more common path of treatment. The second oncologist, feels that the aggressiveness of Jasmin’s tumor warrants chemo-therapy first.

The rationale behind chemo-first is this: the assumption has been made that the cancer has spread to other parts of Jasmin’s body at a microscopic level. While no other tumors have been visibly detected, which is a VERY good thing, the theory goes that the cancer cells are still present in other places than the breast. Therefore, the timing of chemo-therapy is a big consideration.

If you perform surgery first, there is a two to four week recovery time before chemo-therapy can begin. However, once you do begin the treatment, it can focus solely on the microscopic cancer in the body. The down-side to this approach is that it allows for an additional two to four weeks for those microscopic gremlins to multiply, hang out with one another and try to form new tumors.

Surgery first or chemo first. . . that is the question.

On a side-note. . .

Is there any way Jasmin and I would have been able to see three oncologists, two surgeons, perform a surgery to place a medi-port, have a radiologist biopsy Jasmin two separate times, once with a pathologist on stand-by in the room waiting to analyze the samples, and meet with a high-risk OB all in 10 days time in ANY other country? My answer is not a chance. I don’t live in other countries but I have heard the stories. GO VOTE!

Back to the question at hand. Before we moved forward, we wanted the chance to meet with a third oncologist. A tie-breaker if you will. . .best two out of three. Would you believe that we were able to meet with a HIGHLY regarded oncologist on a Friday when she was scheduled to have her day off? Believe it and thank God. The Holy Spirit called an audible for us and we were able to meet on short notice. Scratch that. I guess there is no such thing as an audible to God. Given the fact that all of this has been known to Him since the beginning of time and all.

The appointment went well. We heard some good news and some not so good news. However, at the end of it all, she looked Jasmin in the eyes and told her that her cancer was curable. She told her that she recommends chemo right away. Did I mention that this is a curable cancer? :)

The doctor’s assessment of the cancer included some interesting information regarding the pathology reports and the chemistry of Jasmin’s specific cancer cells. I will have to share this education we received in another post.

Leaving this appointment, we felt confident that Jasmin should proceed with chemo-therapy first. The oncologist we chose is Dr. Ronald Drengler. He came highly recommended and appears to be on top of his game. We feel fortunate to have found such a highly regarded doctor for Jasmin.

Jasmin begins her chemo treatments tomorrow morning at 10:30. Please be in prayer for the following;

- The chemo drugs work effectively with minimal no side effects on Jasmin (Pray BIG, this is God we are praying to)

- Safety, good health and peace for our baby girl. AND that she stays put.

- Comfort and peace for Jasmin.

- Eyes to view our circumstances with an eternal perspective.

- Joy.

- For others to be pointed to Jesus through this trial.

- Wisdom that we do not try to audible out of the plans God has for Jasmin and our family,

Thank you friends for all of your prayers!

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

  9. Jasmin,
“ok tell me everything”! “just tell me what to do”. :) I love you and can’t stop thinking about you. My family and I pray you fight this disease and get well! We pray you get a good nights rest:) miss you so much!
Love, your little Mexican friend Teresa:)

  10. Jasmine and Jeff,

    Grace and peace to you…

We are in shock about what y’all are facing. We are here to cheer team Kahlig on to triumph over this darkness/disease that has attacked you both. We are reminded of our times together in your parent’s home and our desire to see each of you to personally know and follow the narrow way. Now y’all are ministers in that way with your children, family, friends and other CA Club pilgrims that walk in darkness.

We will pray for y’all to remain overcomers in the name of our most high Lord and merciful savior….

By the way, I know the color hair the little bean will have from the sonogram…….black or white!!!!?

How about Grace or Mercy for a name?

  11. You are in good hands with Dr Drengler. He is the best and thankfully you found him. Someone is definitely looking after you at this time. Strength and love to you. Rest tonight and begin your battle with this horrible disease knowing that you have an army of folks behind you all the way!

  12. Isaiah 26:4 (KJV)

Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

Lord Jesus grant your strength to Jamine as you join in this battle for victory. May your name be glorified. Please give rest and peace to Jasmine and give hope to each of us. Thank you for your mercy and loving kindness that is without end. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our strength and fortress.

  13. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking and praying for you this morning. Some how some way you always walk each day giving God all the Glory. I know today will be hard for you, but I also know that there is peace in your heart today. The kind of peace that so many people have a difficult time feeling. It is the prescience of God that lives in your heart. It is such an honor to be your sister in Christ and to walk this journey called life, side by side.

    1 Peter 1:3-9
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ, and though you have not seen him, you love him, and though you do not see him now, but believe in him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

Thank you Jeff for being such an amazing and spiritual husband. There is power in a praying spouse!

  14. Jasmine–I haven’t met you yet, but I’ve known Jeff since high school. Your situation is on my heart today… Cancer affects way too many people I know. I hate very little in life, but I HATE Cancer. I love seeing/reading all of the support you have–that and a Godly husband are the best tools you can have. You also have a lot of prayerful warriors on your side. Success is secured. Blessings from a far!

  15. I seriously think that the baby needs to be named Joy, for so many reasons. I know Jasmin has a sister by that name as well:) I love and appreciate your bullet point list of things to pray for. I will do so. Thanks also for the details. It helps with prayers, although God knows all and he is who we are praying to. Hugs to yall!

  16. Jasmin, I just read the news on Facebook and Cari sent me this link. What amazing husband you have to write such beautiful words for you and has such a wonderful heart filled with God. You and your family will be in my prayers. In the words of a friend who also had a battle with cancer, fight like hell!!

  17. The Lord works in mysterious ways. I had no clue what you were going through. After coming across the pictures on FB, finding your blog, crying and praying, I emailed my mom. Her response back to me was a forward from one of her close friends. She received our emails at the same time. Her friend let her know that she is leaving for Jerusalem in a week, and that if she or anyone else wanted to send a special prayer request, or a prayer of thanksgiving with her, she would deliver it to the Holy Land. There will be a prayer for you and your family in that envelope. If any of your family or friends would like to send prayers, they can email them to me at 5fretwells@gmail.com.

My prayers won’t stop… please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Release your momma bear and fight! <3

"The Lord will fight for you and you need only be still." Exodus 14:14

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and Courageous. Do not be terrified; Do not be discouraged, For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you may go." Joshua 1:9

  18. Jasmine and Jeff: it is so wonderful and heartfelt to see the outpouring of love and support you both are being shown through your “God-given” friends. Well I have some MORE support for you. I wrote to the ACTS Group and told them of your situation. And I asked for prayers for your family. There has been some personal responses to me and I will forward them to your private e-mail addresses so you can see that ALL Christians whether Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, etc all are called to be YOUR Warriors right now. There is a quote: “You must be careful how you walk and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set.” Robert E. Lee. You have both been in my prayers throughout this day. You are being “the teachers” to us all right now, thank you for that. The FIRST day at anything is always the hardest and you have passed that setpoint. I wish you both a night of peaceful sleep and love. Sondra (Jeff’s Mother)

  19. Jasmin & Jeff,
I am a friend of Amber Walters and learned of your trial through her FB entry. I am here to say . . . with the Lord, Jesus Christ, as your center . . . you will get through this struggle! One year ago, I too received the word that rocked my world – “You have Stage III rectal cancer”. Like you, I was shocked, but completely trusted that God doesn’t allow anything to pass through His hands without His purposes and glory being fulfilled. I will join Christians around the world who will unite in praying for you and your family. Know you are not alone in this journey. I pray that you will have joy in the process and see the hand of God reaching down from heaven to comfort you and support you. I promise you will see the body of Christ move in mighty ways. The only advice I can give is to trust that God will direct you to those treatments He wants you to pursue. If you don’t feel the Holy Spirit prompting you to pursue a course of treatment, don’t do it! I refused several options my doctors suggested because I didn’t feel that this was what the Lord wanted. I did have chemotherapy (Xeloda – a pill form of 5FU) and radiation prior to my surgery. I am happy to report that when the doctors went to remove the Stage III tumor – it wasn’t there! Also, all 17 lymph nodes were completed clear! Trusting the same outcome for you and your precious cargo! I will pray without ceasing!
    In Him,
    Eva Haier
P.S. Call me anytime – Amber has my number.

  20. Thank God the oncologist gave you some “good” news…I love those words “your cancer is curable”!! God has brought you here and He will bring you through this too.

    Love from Rineyville :)

  21. We will be praying tomorrow morning along with many others. God is good and thanks to him this cancer is curable. Jasmin you and your baby girl are on my heart, I pray she stay put and keep growing. Thanks again for this blog, love to all of you, Faith

  22. Jeff & Jasmin,
Your examples of strength, courage, faith and humility will surely lead others to Jesus and bring those of us who already know Him closer in our daily walk with Him. Thank you, Jeff, for taking the time to keep everyone informed in the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your family’s journey. Praying continuously, Catina

  23. Please know that there are loads of people praying for you! May you feel God’s loving arms surround you and support you during treatment and recovery. Blessings , Harriet & Darrell

  24. Jasmin,

I will be praying for you and your family. May God guide the doctors to help you heal quickly. You are in my heart and always on my mind. You have always been such an incredible person with an amazing heart. Praying for comfort and peace. Stacy

  25. Jasmine and Jeff,
I just heard this news today, and first and foremost, please know that I will be lifting you all up in constant prayer. I know that prayer is most important!

I do also feel a need to share a little story with you…Jasmine, I’m not sure that I shared any details with you over the last few years, but let’s just say that the Lord brings this vast world into a small one! Just read on and you’ll see!! So on with the story-we’ll pretend I’m sitting in your chair and you’re swiping color!!
When Tim and I were just a few years into our marriage, blessed with two beautiful daughters (5 years & 20 months) and feeling, well, I guess I would say feeling comfortable, Tim complained of having some pains in his chest and feeling short of breath. But being 35 and in fantastic physical shape with an extremely healthy lifestyle, we knew it was ‘nothing’. Finally, he went to the doctor and was told he had seasonal allergies and asthma. Fast forward three weeks with a new MD….rather than spending the day at home listening to Raffi!, or taking the girls out to greet daddy pulling in the driveway at his usual time, I found myself sitting next to Tim in the hospital and listening to an oncologist tell us that Tim had Stage 4 Small-diffuse B-cell Non-hodgkins Lymphoma …1 large central tumor in his mediastinal cavity measuring 21 cm, 8-10 rumors in each lung, 4 tumors in his abdomen, an 8 cm tumor in his spleen. The nugget of good news was that it was not in his brain.
The internal medicine doctor who admitted Tim and ran the initial tests called in an oncologist who he knew personally and highly recommended. He, the oncologist, met with us that day and disgussed an aggressive treatment plan. But with Tim’s diagnosis and initial prognosis, we were advised by many to go to MD Anderson. The oncologist agreed that we would benefit from a second opinion and that he would arrange for a 3-way phone consultation with the Chief of Lymphoma/Luekemia at MD Anderson, himself, and me. After completing a 1 hour phone discussion where everyone laid out/ listened to treatment plans, etc., Tim and I went to the Lord in prayer. At that point, I asked God to do nothing short of yelling the answer in our ears…lol…He did! Are you ready?
Tim and I both felt that Dr. Ronald Drengler was God’s choice for his oncologist. Dr. Drengler is amazing, and I believe the Lord has given him a great gift. Likewise, his entire staff and nurses were awesome. Dr. Drengler was a part of our lives (our daughters included!) for 10 years, and two years ago he shook Tim’s hand, told him that he’d never forget him, and to have a good life! Tim always says he had the best team – God and Dr. Drengler.
Jasmine, I will be praying for you and that sweet baby girl, and the whole family. I know you have a wonderful support group, but if I can help in any way please call me anytime! Love and hugs –

  26. To Jasmin, Jeff and your beautiful family,

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you…”

  30. “Team Jasmin and New Baby Girl”
    Fight for Life
Jeff you could have not said it any better and I can confirm it myself. WE ARE so very fortunate to have so many resources to go to for immediate assistance and to receive such great care. God has truly been a blessing in all of our lives and where we live, we cannot thank Him enough. He is our savior and will always look after us when we keep our eyes focused on Him, no matter what life changing events we face. Your family is in our prayers and I know Jasmin and your new baby girl will beat this disease! I’m on my way home from overseas to see my hair dresser and get some T-shirts made up so I can be part of what I’m calling “Team Jasmin and New Baby Girl” – Fight for Life!
    Love you all the Wissing’s

  31. Thank you so much for sharing this!!!! Jasmin…. you are such a strong person…… stronger than you know. I will include you in ALL of my prayers. You will get through this!!!! XOXOXOXO

  32. We are praying for you and your family ..Hang in there…I love reading your posts..We too had cancer in our home and with lots and lots of prayers, my husband is now cancer free!! That post will be on this walk one day real soon…God be with You..

  33. Just wanted to say I’m so grateful you got through the Chemo well yesterday. I praise the Lord that we call on a God who listens and answers prayer. He is truly all knowing and I feel confident He is being glorified through your trial. As so many people are crying out to Him on your behalf. You are bringing us all closer to our Lord. I pray you will rest in the knowledge that He is using you for His glory and He will bring you through. May you rest in His perfect peace and presence tonight. All my love,
    Anne

  34. Jasmin,

I went to have my haircut today and was able to catch up on things with Joy. When we found out last week (Mom went and had her hair cut) we were both devastated. Your case really hit home since my aunt was diagnosed with cancer during her pregnancy. The fact that they are treating you now, is a miracle. God has everything planned, even if we don’t understand. In listening to Joy, you seem to be in great spirits. Keep it up! That’s what you need to fight this. You and your family are such a blessing to so many people, all of whom I know are praying for your healing and the health of your baby. I hope you don’t mind, but I asked for people to pray for you on my facebook. When mom was sick, I was amazed at how many people all over the city were praying for her.

I know you have a large family and circle of friends, but if we can do anything, please let us know. You know I love to cook and would be happy to stock the fridge with some home cooked stuff to make it easy on you guys.

Take this day by day. As God reveals his miracle, enjoy it. That sounds funny, but when you look back, you’ll understand.

We love and miss you. Hope to hear from you soon!
    Cinnamon Cherry

  35. Jasmine, we are praying for you and your family. May God guide you to a healthy recovery. May you findl the peace and comfort in your heart. Praying for you.

    ~ Pam

  39. Dear Jasmin and family,
I will praying for all of you through this difficult time. You have been in my thoughts ever since I heard the news. Monique did my hair today and did a fabulous job, but it was so sad to see your empty station. Wishing you strength to get through each day, hope for you and the baby, and love for all of you.
    Susan Peterson

  40. Jeff and Jasmin, I think about you everyday. Your faith is inspiring and I know you will survive this. It is a tough road to travel and you will have good days and bad. But you will come out of this strong and healthy with a new appreciation for life and the world around you. We are praying for you!

  41. Precious friends, I know the “God of Preparation” has laid down enough truth in you to prepare you for these days. A favorite verse (aka “the nurse verse” for me: Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not for I am with you. Do not anxiously look about you for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  42. An eternal perspective…praise God that as believers we are given this gracious gift. It is a hard perspective to live from, with a world bombarding us from every side. How inspiring your words are, and to see each of you living in this perspective.

Jasmin: I have been praying for you…since before I knew it was YOU…I am no good when it comes to names. I have many good memories with you from high school, and of you through Lauren.
I am so overjoyed to see your faith overflowing during this trial. And what a Godly man you have been given to travel this world with –not to mention 2 beautiful children with one sweet pea on the way! Our God is so big, I know you know this. I will continue in prayer for your incredible strength and courageand and peace…and for that of your family.

The light if God surrounds you all. The love of God enfolds you all. The power of God protects you all. The presence of God watches over you all. And wherever each of you are God is. Amen

    With love and in prayer,
    Natalie (Drake) Downing
